An update from Resurgence & Ecologist editor-in-chief Satish Kumar

As our first issue of Resurgence & Ecologist magazine reaches our readers, I am very pleased to report that the joining together of the two titles has gone very well. Now, we have one magazine in print, which our Resurgence members receive six times a year.

In case you do not know it, the new Resurgence & Ecologist magazine is an 82-page, full colour, glossy magazine covering critical issues from Gaia to Greenpeace, politics to poetry and organic to Occupy.

We are also settling into the new rhythm of maintaining the Ecologist website itself by publishing new articles each week. For those who’ve been keeping an eye, in the last week alone we’ve published a piece asking whether we need specialist environmental courts and linked that to Earth Justice – a performance of a brand new poem by eco poet Helen Moore which was inspired by the recent mock trial testing the proposed Ecocide laws. We’ve also published pieces on how the arts can help imagine a better future, why our clothing should come not with designer but with eco labels and an inspiring piece on the small Turkish town resisting plans for a big coal plant on its doorstep.

Recently, I was invited to sign an international statement on transforming finance. My friend, the economist and founder of Ethical Markets, Hazel Henderson, initiated this statement providing six fundamental principles which should be adopted to guide the world’s economic and financial policies.

This is short and simple, yet one of the most profound statements I have come across and one which every politician, business leader, journalist, academic and policy-maker should read and practice.

There are no short-cut solutions to our problems of debt, unemployment and economic recession. We have to live by the laws of Nature and the higher wisdom of humanity, in other words – Life Principles.

And so now, in turn, I urge you to read the Statement on Transforming Finance Based on Life’s Principles and spread the word as widely as you can.

You can read it here.
