Non-GM corn hybrids smash GM varieties in Illinois trials

The harvest is in from hybrid corn trials in Illinois. The outcome? Spectrum Seeds' non-GM corn hybrids performed as well or better than the GMO corn hybrids.
Farmers now have the opportunity to lower input costs and effectively increase profitability with the use of non-GMO corn hybrids.

Spectrum Seeds, a US non-GM seed company based in Linden, Indiana, has announced its 2013 crop trial results. And its non-GM premium hybrid seeds used in the testing, produced 3 to 10 more bushels per acre compared to standard GM corn hybrid varieties.

"In addition to competitive yield performance, our aim is to exceed seed purity demands from grain producers as well as grain users across the country who are trying to reach a fast growing consumer market for food products derived from non-GMO sources," says company sales manager Roger Rudolph.

"These regional data summaries are evidence that farmers now have the opportunity to lower input costs and effectively increase profitability with the use of non-GMO corn hybrids. Yield, plant health, standability, and drydown are on par with, if not improved, to their GMO counterparts from the major companies. Our hybrids are carefully selected to provide an alternative for growers striving to become more profitable and more sustainable."

Spectrum Premium Non-GMOTM is an independent brand of genetically improved corn seed sold in 38 states. Spectrum negotiated license agreements in 2008 before beginning large scale seed production. The company is now in its fourth year of sales and is offering 20 different premium corn hybrids for the 2014 planting season, all optimized for Non-GM production systems.

    Increasing quantities of 'hidden GMOs' are finding their way into our diet, writes Pat Thomas. They are coming mainly in US imports for supermarkets and caterers, and in animal feeds used for meat, dairy and egg production. It's time for chefs, pubs, takeaways and restaurants to take responsibility for the food chains that supply them - labelling the GMOs in their meals, and better still, cutting them out.
