Six of the best…eco-friendly festival beauty essentials

festival beauty
From sunscreen to insect repellant, Ruth Styles rounds up the products that will see you through festival season

With eight pop-fests scheduled in this weekend and Glastonbury just 10 days away, the festival season is well and truly upon us. Happily, festival beauty is a cinch - despite the paucity of washing facilities. Swap your bulging make-up bag and heavy pots of moisturiser for a pared down regime based on tinted lipbalm (doubles as a cheek stain), sunscreen and cleansing wipes. Add a little insect repellent and a spritz of natural deodorant, and you’re good to go. Here are our top all-natural picks.

Yes to Cucumbers Facial Towelettes
A true travel essential, Yes to Cucumbers Facial Towelettes, £4.99, are the business for getting rid of accumulated dirt, grime and make-up. As with the rest of the range, the towelettes are paraben, phthalates and SLS free, and are 100 per cent biodegradeable.

Korres Pomegranate Lip Butter
A gorgeous bright pink balm, Korres’ Pomegranate Lip Butter, £6, doubles as a cheek and lip tint, and comes in a cute handbag-sized pot. The main ingredient is natural shea butter, while its softening properties come courtesy of rice wax.

Costume National Eco Deodorant
Based on Costume National’s successful 21 fragrance, the Italian fashion brand’s Eco Deodorant, £30, comes in a recyclable glass bottle and is paraben free. The milk and saffron scented spray uses a bacterium-static action to prevent sweat breaking down into the nasty niff better known as BO and includes the natural preservative ethylhexylglycerin.

Mrs White’s Unstung Hero
A natural insect repeller and cologne combined, Mrs White’s Unstung Hero, £15, renders you invisible to mosquitos for up to four hours and smells gently lemony with no overpowering citronella notes.

Badger SPF30 for Face and Body
Lightly lavender scented, Badger’s face and body sunscreen, £14.95, is rich enough to double up as moisturiser and is certified 100 per cent natural. Its powers of sun protection come courtesy of zinc oxide and as it’s water resistant, it’ll stay put even if it rains.

Connock London Wonder Balm
Based on Kukui oil, Connock London’s Wonder Balm, £18.50, is packed with naturally occurring essential fatty acids plus vitamins A, E and F, all of which help to revitalise and restore skin. Traditionally used as a treatment for skin conditions such as acne and ezecma, the Kukui oil in Wonder Balm makes it a great portable treatment for any knocks and scrapes picked up in the mosh pit. It also works brilliantly on dry elbows and cuticles.
